TRANSCRIPT
Charlie: They made us talk out load, even though we could hardly understand each other without signing. There were kids there who didn’t have any language AT ALL. They never learned how to sign. It was like they were trapped. When I got out of there, I said to myself, “I’m never doing that again.”
She sits up straight, looking defiant.
Charlie: I’m good at signing. That’s my real voice.
Pepper, smiling slightly: It is.
